Araucaria
  • ARAUCARIA
  • The groves of araucaria trees on the virgin mountain are a natural sanctuary. Each tree is a temple, a pagoda, an altar; an antenna between earth and heaven, across the atmosphere and through the centuries. Its ruler is pehuen, the sovereign of the native forest. The pehuen is a towering mast: the axis ofthe south of the continent. Neither the fury of the elements nor the incessantpassage of time can daunt its courage.

Considered a living fossil, with scale-like leaves, the aracuaria tree grows in the southern Andes, in regions with heavy snowfall above 1000 metres. Many are over 1000 years old. The Mapuche Indians have venerated this tree for centuries, and the Pehuenche tribes derive their name from the pehuén, the fruit of the araucaria tree - which legend tells has saved them from aterrible famine. It is also the national tree of Chile.
